Health Care in Peterborough:

The Peterborough Regional Health Centre will soon become one of the finest in Ontario with the building of a new 715,000 square-foot, state of the art facility. Presently operating on two sites, the current 360-bed capacity will be expanded to include 494-beds all housed under one roof. Offering high-level tertiary care services such as dialysis, vascular surgery and MRI, the Health Centre provides care to a population base of more than 300,000 people living in the four surrounding counties.

The Health Centre works with partner agencies within the community to provide seamless care between the hospital and home. A close working relationship with Trent University and Fleming College has students at the hospital giving patients access to cutting edge health care. With a dedicated staff of approximately 2,000 (including 350 physicians) and more than 600 volunteers, the Health Centre is the city’s largest employer, followed by school boards and local government.

The ‘Institute for Healthy Aging’ at Fleming College is conducting applied research into technologies designed to serve the needs of seniors and improve the lives of our aging population. An innovative partnership has been created between the college and the St. Joseph’s Care Group who are building a long-term care facility on campus. Providing additional space for research and academic facilities will enable students to acquire professional development through applied work placements. This unique initiative will support healthy aging within our community.
